Abstract
Background. S.D. Chornyy is one of the most famous employees of the Kyiv Observatory and not only that. Ukrainian, graduate of Kyiv University, teacher at a number of higher and secondary educational institutions, former director of Warsaw and Kyiv observatories, organizer of new scientific directions and observation programs in Kyiv, popularizer of science. His biography was repeatedly published in many publications and presented on portals and websites. At the same time, some inaccuracies and white spots in his biography still remain, new interesting details are revealed through newly discovered mediated materials and archival documents.
Results. The article presents an extended and detailed biography of an extraordinary personality and his scientific path according to all the sources found by the authors. His most complete bibliography is collected.
Conclusions. The scientific and life path of the professor of astronomy, the former director of the Kyiv University Astronomical Observatory, his contribution to the development of scientific research of the institution, the deployment of new observational programs, the training of astronomical personnel and popularization of science were revealed.
